| The Writing Center |
| |
The Writing Center is located in the Aerospace Center.
The Writing Center is open 8am-7pm Monday through
Thursday, and 8am to 1pm on Fridays. The telephone number is 867-2303. Appointments are helpful, but not always necessary.
The Writing Center is available for all TSTC students, regardless of their technology, who wish to improve their writing skills. Because writing is a form of communication, good writing skills are essential, no matter what occupation one pursues. We provide tutoring for English classes as well as writing across the curriculum.
The Writing Center, a free service provided by the English department, provides one-on-one tutoring sessions for any student, whether the student is writing a paper, or just needs someone to look over a resume. The Center has 11 new Dell computers, 4 for general student use, and the remaining for tutoring sessions. These computers come equipped with the Microsoft 2000 and XP Office suites, including Word, Access, PowerPoint, and Excel. Microsoft Publisher and Internet access are also available on all machines. We not only provide computerized help, but also a scanner, TV and VCR, and a Reference Library that covers an array of subject matter. |

| The Writing Center also houses a small library. It contains over 200 books covering a variety of subjects including writing, technical writing, literature, Spanish, communication, public speaking, and critical thinking. The library is home to many magazines ranging from entertainment to political activism. There is also a conference table that can seat seven and can be used for group study or individual students. |
| One-on-one tutorials are available for any TSTC student who wishes to improve his or her writing. The tutorial generally lasts 30 minutes and is planned according to the student’s schedule. The student can come by, call, or email to request an appointment time. |
| The student should bring his or her Writing Center Referral form (if available), an assignment sheet (if available) detailing what is expected from the instructor, and any brainstorming or rough draft pertaining to the assignment. Sometimes it is helpful to bring in the last completed paper so that the tutor can assess the student’s writing style and identify common mistakes. |
Interaction and open discussion are a major part of the tutorial. When a student comes for a tutorial, he or she can expect questions from the tutor. Remember, this is not only a time for the student to listen to the tutor, but also a time for the tutor to listen to the student. This is so that the tutor can have a better understanding of the student’s writing habits and any general concerns that the student might possess. |
| Within the tutorial, the student can also expect computerized help. Each tutorial cubicle comes equipped with a new Dell PC. The computer can be used to pull up a paper from a disk or for computerized help. The Writing Center has access to several excellent Websites offering everything from online tutorials to basic grammar handouts. The computers can also be used for Internet research and for use of the Microsoft Office suite and Microsoft Publisher. |

Faculty can attach the Referral forms to an email and send the form directly to the Writing Center. [wawritingcenter@tstc.edu]
All instructors can refer their students to the Writing Center using the Writing Center Referral form. This form contains two sections, one that is filled-out by the instructor and the other that is fill-out by the tutor. The instructor inserts the student’s name, instructor, course, date, and directions for the student. The tutor fills-out the appointment time, tutor name, comments about the tutoring session, and which resources were used with the student. After the instructor fills-out the form for a student, he or she should give the green Writing Center Referral form to the student. Regardless of the method of contact, it is imperative that the student brings the Writing Center Referral form to his tutorial session. After the tutorial is over, the tutor completes the referral form and sends a copy to the student’s instructor.
If a student comes to the Writing Center and does not have his or her Writing Center Referral form, the tutor will fill-out a referral form indicating what was discussed in the tutorial. A copy will be sent to the instructor. |
If a student is anxious about a paper, has grammar and content concerns, or needs someone to look over a resume, the Writing Center can help. As every TSTC student has free access to the Writing Center, a student can utilize the Writing Center’s services without being referred. At the student’s convenience, he or she can come by the Writing Center and sign up for a tutorial. After the tutorial, the tutor will fill-out a referral form and send a copy to the student’s instructor. |

| We realize that there are times when a student needs a scanner to scan in pictures for a proposal or presentation. Because of this, the Writing Center has a cubicle that not only contains a PC, but also a Microtek ScanMaker 5900. The PC comes equipped with Adobe PhotoDeluxe, which can be used to edit scanned pictures.
This cubicle also contains a TV and VCR that can be used to watch a video that a student might have missed in class. We supply headphones so as not to disturb other students. |
