The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) forecasts
excellent job prospects for heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration
mechanics and installers, "particularly for those who have completed
training from an accredited technical school." The rising number of workers
nearing retirement age, the need for replacement for older systems with
newer, energy-saving units, and other factors will create plenty of job
opportunities. If fact, the BLS indicates contractors have reported problems
finding enough workers to fill jobs.
And while entry salaries may be lower, average wages for experienced
technicians can range up to approximately $18 an hour, according to 2008-
2009 edition of the BLS.s Occupational Outlook Handbook. Salaries and
benefits vary by location and company.
