| In 1994, TSTC officials removed of a bowling alley on campus to break ground on a new recreational center. The TSTC Student Recreation Center opened its doors to students in 1995. The SRC was built to provide TSTC students the opportunities to participate in various activities and campus life.
The center was renamed to the Murray Watson Jr. Student Recreation Center on April 29, 1999 after the Texas Senator who was instrumental in securing funds for the perpetuation of TSTC. Senator Watson was a champion of the bill signed by Governor John B. Connally to fund TSTC. It was because of the guidance of Senator Watson and the 61 st Legislature that made TSTC independent from Texas A&M University and its renaming to Texas State Technical Institute.
The Student Rec Center was named in his honor as a tribute to Senator Watson's leadership and reflection of the college's gratitude for his past and current leadership in support of TSTC. |
