Student in Texas State Technical College Student Testing Center image

We want you to be successful in your college courses so your college placement test is an important first step for you. The course placement tests will assess your current skill levels in reading, writing and math. Once you know where you are now, then you can enroll in the right courses to build on your current skills. Your placement test scores will determine which courses you may enroll in at Texas State Technical College (TSTC). You must complete placement testing before registering for classes. Please visit with a Success Coach to determine if you need to take the placement test.

Before you take the placement test, take time to refresh your reading, writing and math skills so that you can do your very best on your test.

Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA)
The TSI Assessment is a program designed to help institutions determine if students are ready for college-level coursework in the general areas of Reading, Writing and Mathematics. This program also will help determine what type of course or intervention will best meet the students' needs to help them become college-level ready.

If you are an incoming college student in Texas, you are required to take the TSI Assessment — unless you are already exempt (read below)— to determine your readiness for college-level work. Based on how you perform, you may either be enrolled in a college-level course that matches your skill level or be placed in the appropriate developmental course or intervention to improve your skills and prepare you for success in college-level courses.

Do I have to take the TSIA?
You may be exempt if you:
Have met the minimum college readiness standard on SAT®, ACT, TAKS or STAAR;
Have successfully completed a college preparatory course in high school
Have met the TSI requirements at another accredited higher education institution based on successfully completed college-level or developmental course work;
Have an associate or baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution
Have enrolled in a Level-One certificate program (fewer than 43 semester credit hours)
Are not seeking a degree; or
Have been, or currently are, in the military. (You must provide a copy of your DD Form 214 showing an honorable discharge to a Success Coach).

If you believe you are exempt, please provide an official high school or college transcript to the Office of Admissions.
