Salaries & Advancement:
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of artists, designers and related workers is expected to grow about as fast as the average through the year 2012. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the median annual earnings for graphic designers was $36,680 in 2002. The middle 50 percent earned between $28,140 and $48,820. Salaries can vary widely between companies and from city to city.

Technicians in Demand:
ADP graduates can look forward to exciting, fast-paced career opportunities throughout Texas and the country. While advertising firms are concentrated in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, as well as Detroit, San Francisco, Boston and Dallas, graduate opportunities also exist with magazines, newspapers, television stations, printing firms, production houses, outdoor billboard designers and direct mail advertising operations. BLS projections indicate 21 percent employment growth in the advertising industry for the 1998-2008 period (faster than the average for all industries) as the expanding economy generates more products and services to advertise.

The Technical Advantage:
ADP students use many materials and computer applications to gain the competitive edge, such as:
  • An array of artists' tools and supplies;
  • Adobe PhotoShop—for sizing, scanning and manipulating photographs;
  • Adobe Illustrator—for designing and maneuvering graphic images and illustrations; and
  • QuarkXPress—for crafting ad components like headlines, body copy and artwork.
Professional Associations:
ADP graduates can network through organizations such as the American Advertising Federation, the Advertising Club of Waco, the Texas Fine Arts Association, the Texas Visual Arts Association and the Central Texas Watercolor Society.
