HOT BEST Robotics Competition Winners

(Waco) – Hundreds of Central Texas middle and high school students descended on Texas State Technical College (TSTC) and University High School over the course of several days in early November to compete in the BEST Robotics competition. BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) is a non-profit organization whose goal is to help students develop technological literacy skills, encourage interest in engineering, science and technology, and inspire the pursuit of careers in these lucrative fields.

Taking top honors and advancing to the Texas BEST regional championship at UT Dallas November 8-9 were No. 1 Crawford, No. 2 Belton New Tech and No. 3 GWAMA (Greater Waco Advanced Manufacturing Academy). Belton New Tech received the UT Dallas Judges’ Choice Award.

The format of BEST requires students to create a fictitious company and appoint officers and employees who will design, build and market their robot to the public. Teams often include a mix of middle and high schoolers, as well as students with a variety of skills and interests.

Though the overall goal is to design and build a robot from a standard set of parts that will accomplish a specific task in just six short weeks, teams must exhibit well-rounded skills to win. In addition to the much-anticipated robot head-to-head finale, students are judged on their marketing presentation skills, team exhibit and interviews, engineering notebook and spirit and sportsmanship. Crawford placed first in three of these four categories—marketing, team exhibit and spirit.

By many accounts, this year’s head-to-head robot competition was one of the toughest. Called “Gatekeeper,” the game’s premise required students to build a robot that could pick up a variety of items representing the parts of a computer’s central processing unit (CPU) and place them in designated areas. In addition to the skill required to design and build the robot, students had to strategize about which parts and how many of each they should try to capture to score the most points in the three-minute time limit.

GWAMA scored the most points to lock in first place in the robot head to head portion of the competition, followed by Reicher Catholic High School, Belton New Tech High and Crawford High School. “The robot head to head is really what the kids look forward to,” said TSTC Outreach Coordinator and Director of the HOT BEST Hub, Trey Pearson. “Several other schools scored higher than Crawford in the head to head, but they were just too strong overall to be beat.”

TSTC has sponsored and hosted the HOT BEST event for the past 4 years. For more information about the event, please call Trey Pearson at 254-867-2015 or visit http://resources.tstc.edu/BEST/
