Salaries & Advancement:

With the current demand for technicians, career opportunities and advancement look excellent. According to a June 2000 analysis of the aviation maintenance profession by the FAA, the average starting salary for an avionics technician in general aviation ranges between $22,000 and $28,000 per year. That same analysis indicated that the average salary for an avionics technician with five years of experience ranges between $28,000 and $35,000 per year. The September 2003 Rate Survey conducted by the Aircraft Electronics Association, or AEA, indicated that the average salary for avionics shop managers in the central United States is $57,118 per year, with some earning over $126,000 annually.

Technicians in Demand:

The avionics field has grown at a phenomenal rate in the past few years. According to the FAA, Texas has more than 130 avionics repair facilities. The September 2003 Rate Survey conducted by the Aircraft Electronics Association also reported that 51 percent of the avionics facilities in Texas , as well as 46 percent of avionics facilities nationwide are looking to expand.

The state and nation also have numerous defense contractors, avionics manufacturers, airlines, aircraft manufacturers and modification facilities that need individuals who understand avionics systems. These factors add up to an array of exciting career opportunities for skilled, knowledgeable avionics technicians.

The Technical Advantage:

Avionics Technology students attend classes in the $4.5 million Aerospace Center . Students receive hands-on instruction in the only avionics training facility in Texas that has been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration –also referred to as the FAA– as a Certified Repair Station (CRS#FT8R150Q). The Avionics Lab is a fully functional repair facility authorized by the FAA to perform real maintenance on real aircraft.
