Career Outlook

Roles & Responsibilities:
The pharmacy technician has a very high level of responsibility. Because pharmacy technicians receive written prescriptions and refill requests, they must verify the accuracy of the information on the prescriptions. The technician must retrieve, count, pour, weigh, measure and sometimes mix medications. Pharmacy technicians also prepare prescription labels, select prescription containers and affix appropriate labels to the containers.

Technicians often price and file prescriptions, in addition to establishing and maintaining patient profiles, preparing insurance claim forms and stocking and taking inventory of prescription and over-the-counter medications. In hospitals, technicians have added responsibilities such as reading patient charts, preparing medications, delivering prescribed medications to patients and copying detailed information about those medications onto patient profiles.

Employers want technicians who can:
  • Communicate pleasantly with coworkers and the public;
  • Work well alone and in a team setting;
  • Accurately follow oral and written instructions;
  • Understand and apply mathematical skills; and
  • Follow federal, state and local laws regulating the pharmaceutical industry.
Industry Standards:
In addition to earning a certificate from TSTC, graduates can earn the Certified Pharmacy Technician, or CPhT, designation through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. Certified technicians can continue to build knowledge and skills through re-certification requirements, which include ongoing professional development, every two years.
