| Step 1-What is distance learning? |
| |
| |
Distance learning is any learning environment where the instructor is physically separated from the student and information transfer occurs via some communications medium. You may have heard the term, "learn any time, any where" in connection with distance learning.
Does distance learning really mean any time any where?
- Usually there will be deadlines and due dates.
- In most cases you'll be on your computer to complete assignments.

| |
At the current time there is no set format for courses through distance learning. Each class has different requirements. The courses range from self paced to those with rigorous schedules.
Possibilities of what course schedules may be like:
- All the material is given up front, only requiring that you finish the material by the end of the semester.
- Calendars may be given with dates that certain assignments are due, but you still have all the material and may move faster if you so choose.
- You may cover only a portion of the material at a time, and you must attend chat room sessions, etc, at various designated times.
Tests may be online, or a written test may be required. If you are a true distance student, then you typically have to arrange to have tests proctored. |

| |
Learning materials could include:
- textbooks
- videos
- other reading materials
- group activities
- tests
Communication may occur through:
- telephone
- e-mail
- discussions board
- chat sessions
Distance learning uses technology to bring education as close as your personal computer. Instructors are learning new methods to expand their students' knowledge though this fast and changing technology. |

So is it any time? Distance classes allow you to choose the time during your schedule to learn. Even with required attendance at a chat session, you are given several times to choose from that will best fit your schedule. You may still have deadlines and due dates, you are not required to be in a classroom at a certain time on a certain day.
What about any where? You must have a computer connection to get the assignments and submit them. The type of technology equipment you have could determine that answer. If you have wireless connection with a laptop, then you could be on the beach. |

A distance learning student must have the right mind set and internal drive. To see if you are a good candidate, we've designed questionaires which you will complete in the next step.
Take more than one of these questionnaires and compare the results. They should give you a good idea if learning from a distance is for you. |
