Step 2-Could I be an online learner?

Despite the freedom you have in distance learning, you must be organized, not letting tasks and time get away. Time management skills are needed to assure success. You, the student, are responsible for self-learning. Convenience and flexibility do not equal easy, and distance learning is not for everyone.

  • A distance learner must be organized, self-motivated, and disciplined.
  • A distance learner should realize that he or she will spend as much or more time working on course work as those taking the course in the traditional setting.

When you are an off-campus learner you will find that your strengths and weaknesses become amplified, so that knowing how you learn becomes extremely important.

Assessing Yourself:

Do you know if you have an auditory, visual, kinesthetic, concrete/sequential, or abstract/random learning style? What about your personality? You could be an Artisan, Guardian, Rational, or Idealist. Do you know what these styles and personalities entail?

A test that helps you identify your learning style(s) is the Index of Learning Styles Questionaire. Click on this link to complete the questionaire now: Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire.

To test for your personality type, try the Keirsey Temperament Sorter. Click on this link to complete the questionaire now: The Keirsey Temperament Sorter.

Although you may find that the results of these test are not always totally accurate, the results might help you understand how you relate to others and how you perceive the world around you.

After reviewing your learning style and personality traits you may want to take the distance learning self evaluation questionnaire to see if those styles and traits will work well in a distance learning environment. Be sure to answer the questions honestly, so you will have an idea if you can be successful in this type of environment.
