Step 6-Library services for distance learning students

As a distance-learning student you have the following research resources available from the TSTC Waco Library:

TexShare Card (see http://walib.tstc.edu/index/dl/texShare.asp website)

TexShare is a state program that allows member libraries to give circulation privileges to the patrons of other member libraries. For example, TSTC students who have a TexShare card are given checkout privileges at any Texas library that is a TexShare member. TexShare cardholders may consult the TexShare website at http://www.texshare.edu/ for a listing of libraries which participate in the Card Program and the specific lending policies of the library you wish to visit.

Only students who live in Texas may apply for a TexShare card. Students living in Texas who are from campuses other than TSTC Waco must apply for a TexShare card at the library on the campus from which the student has registered for distance-learning courses.

TSTC Waco distance-learning students in Texas may request a TexShare card via the Internet if they are not within driving distance of the TSTC Waco campus and are not taking on-campus classes:

  • First. Click on TSTC Library Reference link (http://walib.tstc.edu/reference.asp).
  • Second. Type in that you are requesting a TexShare card.
  • Third. Provide your name, student ID number, and mailing address.
  • Fourth. Click on "Submit" to send the information.
  • Fifth. After we verify the information, we will mail you the TexShare card.

Students who are within driving distance of the TSTC Waco campus or who are taking on-campus classes in addition to Distance Learning may use the campus library and must apply for a TexShare card between 8 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays at the TSTC Waco Library Circulation Desk. TexShare cards may be used at member libraries when you cannot locate your reference need at the TSTC Waco Library.

When you use the TexShare card to borrow materials from any library, all materials need to be returned by their due dates and all materials must be returned no later than the date indicated on the TexShare card, whichever date comes first. Any charges for late or lost materials will be your responsibility. Any abuse of the TexShare card, such as not paying any charges for late or lost materials, will result in the loss of TexShare card privileges.

EBSCO Full-text Periodical online database

Students taking distance-learning courses from TSTC Waco can use services on the TSTC Waco Library Website (http://walib.tstc.edu) including the EBSCO Full-text Periodical online database. The EBSCO-Host database provides full text coverage for nearly 3,000 journals and abstracts, indexing for over 5,000 periodicals, full text coverage for 194 newspapers, including international as well as U.S. newspapers, and over 1,200 pamphlets in full text. The social sciences, humanities, general science, food sciences and nutrition, computer sciences, engineering, education, multi-cultural studies, business, management, economics, medical sciences and health care, religion and philosophy are among the subjects covered by the database.

Due to subscription restrictions, the other databases listed under Online Databases on the home page of the TSTC Waco Library are restricted to on-campus computers and cannot be accessed off campus.

Interlibrary Loan Service

The interlibrary loan service is available to you, as a distance-learning student, when you are unable to find the materials you need for your course in your home library. Click on the Inter-library Loan link (http://walib.tstc.edu/index/service/ill/illhome.asp) on the TSTC Waco Library to request interlibrary loan materials. Please be sure to read the ILL Policy on the TSTC Waco Library Website for detailed instructions before requesting an interlibrary loan. You will need to allow at least three weeks for this service; if the information need is immediate and you do not have this amount of time for an assignment (i.e., your paper/project has a close due date) you may contact the TSTC Waco Library by clicking on the TSTC Waco Library Website Reference link (http://walib.tstc.edu/reference.asp) to request help in locating alternate materials.

There are many large public and private libraries all over the world, including public libraries in the United States, that offer online databases for periodical collections, printed periodicals, and reference collections and may grant privileges to individuals when requested.
