Career Outlook

Roles & Responsibilities:
Most graduates begin their careers as assistants to experienced linemen, installing electrical wiring in new construction and servicing wiring in existing structures. After an initial training period, a graduate can advance to the full position of journeyman lineman, with the opportunity to work nearly anywhere in the world and receive top pay, too.

Other tasks of the trade include setting towers and poles; installing and maintaining insulators, transformers and other equipment; identifying defective devices such as fuses, switches and wires; inspecting and testing powerlines; and many others.

Employers want technicians who can:
  • Climb structures and work in high places;
  • Understand electrical line theories and concepts;
  • Adhere strictly to safety practices;
  • Work in a team environment;
  • Interpret electrical drawings and specs; and,
  • Troubleshoot problems.
Industry Standards:
TSTC Waco conferred more associate degrees than any Texas public college in: engineering-related technologies/technicians; communication and information sciences and support services; and precision production. (Based on U.S. Department of Labor data as reported in the June 18, 2007 issue of "Community College Week.")
