Welcome Letter

Dear Prospective Student:

Thank you for your inquiry about the Geospatial Technology at Texas State Technical College Waco. Whether you love computers, Web design, or working outdoors using state of the art technology we offer excellent career opportunities to our students across numerous industries with incomes averaging $25,000 to $40,000 or more. Our department offers an Associate in Applied Science Degree with specializations in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst, Web-Based GIS, Geomatics (Land/Civil Surveying), and a certificate in GPS.

The events of September 11, 2001 provided stark evidence of the critical need for spatial information and the usefulness of Geographic Information Systems to make critical decisions and to review and update disaster plans.  GIS is not just maps, but smart maps that can examine, analyze, and explain numerous layers of information in new ways making critical decisions easier and more effective. The real power behind GIS is that it links information and location through the combining of databases and maps making it of increasing benefit to almost any industry. The latest trend is to integrate GIS with the Web creating opportunities for students who are knowledgeable in GIS along with web applications.

Trained surveyors are in high demand everywhere providing another exciting opportunity for those that like adventure in the outdoors. Surveying is a critical component in construction, real estate, and road construction, just to mention a few. Currently there is a shortage of qualified surveyors leaving job and salary opportunities wide open for graduates. Salaries may be as high as $40,000 to $60,000 a year in some markets.

During your educational training at TSTC, you will use the latest in GIS, GPS, and Surveying software and hardware. Each student will complete an intensive hands-on curriculum that stresses the basics of GIS and Surveying through advanced applications. Included in the GIS curriculum are related courses in computer programming, databases, and computer-aided drafting. Opportunities to build strong diverse skills are numerous.

Sincerely,

K. Lee Hilliard,
Department Chair
