After anticipating the promising future of an emerging technology, the Texas State Technical College Waco Laser Electro-Optics Technology Department is responding by offering an Overview of Nanotechnology course during the spring session.
TSTC contracted with Technology Futures, Inc. in Nov. 2002 to conduct a technology forecast on nanotecnology. The forecast showed among many things, that the State of Texas is on the leading edge of nano research and nano business.
Nanotechnology can best be considered as a catch all description of activities at the level of atoms and molecules that have applications in the real world. Nanotechnology has opened up new worlds of possibility and promises to provide commercial potential.
“The course covers the basic areas where nano is being used and basic techniques for production and measurement of nano structures,” said Laser Instructor John Pedrotti. It is an introductory course that covers the basic terminology that the industry requires. It's a hands-on approach to the lab, specifically in operation and maintenance of inspection type equipment.”
TSTC developed the nation's first Laser Electro-Optics Technology program in 1969. Students in the two-year LET degree program prepare for a challenging career as a laser optics technician, using some of industry's finest laboratory equipment valued at more than $40 million. |
