Roles & Responsibilities:
MET graduates have an array of responsibilities, often playing vital roles in the design, development, testing and manufacturing of machinery, mechanical parts and other equipment. Graduates design products, create prototypes, test materials and program computers for Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machines and operations. Graduates hold job titles such as mechanical engineering technician, engineering technician, CAD/CAM technician or materials research and development technician.

Employers want technicians who can:
  • Work well as members of a team;
  • Understand mechanical concepts;
  • Generate ideas;
  • Demonstrate creativity;
  • Understand manufacturing processes and materials; and
  • Learn new skills and concepts on their own.
Industry Standards:

TSTC has conferred more associate degrees than any public two-year college in the nation in the Engineering-related Technologies/Technicians category and in the state of Texas in Communication and Information Sciences and Support Services category, according to June 2009 edition of "Community College Week" magazine.

In addition to holding a degree from TSTC, graduates can gain credibility in the field with industry certifications such as those offered by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies. The voluntary certification program combines written exams in over 30 specialties with specific job-related experience requirements.

Further Opportunities:
Graduates of the MET program can pursue Bachelor of Science degrees at several universities that accept MET transfer courses in similar engineering technology disciplines
