Engineering technicians held some 511,000 jobs in 2006, according to the
U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Services (BLS), and most of the
employers, the Bureau notes, prefer to hire workers with at least a two-year
associate degree. Perhaps that's why wages in the field are good for
competent, skilled technicians. BLS figures indicate that nationwide,
mechanical engineering technicians earned average annual wages of $50,040 as
of May 2008. In Texas, wages were slightly higher, at $51,940, depending on
location and company. With experience, salaries can increase substantially,
as will management opportunities.

Mechanical Engineering Technology students use many types of equipment and software to gain the competitive edge, including:
- IDEAS Master Series Engineering Design software;
- Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine tools;
- Destructive and non-destructive material testing equipment;
- Coordinate Measuring Machines; and
- Manufacturing tools and equipment.
|
MET graduates can look forward to outstanding career opportunities through-out Texas and the nation in industries ranging from world-class helicopters to offshore oil tools. Most engineering technicians work in laboratories, offices, manufacturing or industrial sites.

MET students are exposed to established professionals through the program's industry partners and advisory committees. Professional organizations such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers offer additional networking opportunities.
