Career Outlook

Surveying professionals hold an extensive variety of responsibilities.  Using the latest technology available, they gather spatial information and use it for integrating, manipulating, analyzing and displaying data related to positions on the Earth’s surface. The data is then plugged into mapping software to analyze the information and apply it to the specific area needed. Some examples of applications for Surveying technicians include building site selection analysis, drainage design, traffic planning, impact analysis, property assessment and facilities management.  

Outlook Highlights

  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates average annual wages for survey and mapping technicians were $40,370 as of May 2010. 
  • As you advance in your career and get additional training, salaries can raise to $58,140 as a full-blown surveyor.  
  • Overall industry employment is expected to increase by 18 percent between now and 2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.
  • Texas is the No. 1 state with the highest employment level of surveying and mapping technicians. The metropolitan areas of Dallas and Houston have some of the highest employment levels in the nation for those in the field.
